FOREST STEWARDSHIP CERTIFICATE
FSC certificate refers to certification granted by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification confirms that wood, paper, and other forest products were sourced from a forest that is managed responsibly.
The FSC certification system has two primary types, both essential for a final product to carry the FSC label:
1. Forest Management (FM) Certification
This certification is given to forest owners and managers and verifies that the forest is managed according to the FSC’s strict principles, which cover:
Environmental Protection: Maintaining the forest’s biodiversity, ecological processes, and integrity.
Social Benefit: Protecting the rights of workers, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities.
Economic Viability: Ensuring the forest operations are beneficial and sustainable in the long term.
2. Chain of Custody (CoC) Certification
This is the certification most businesses involved in manufacturing and trade require. It tracks the certified material from the forest to the final consumer.
Purpose: It ensures that FSC-certified material is separated from non-certified material at every stage of processing (including harvesting, processing, manufacturing, and distribution).
Requirement: Any company that processes, transforms, or sells an FSC-certified product (e.g., a paper mill, a furniture manufacturer, or a printer) must have CoC certification to use the FSC label on their products.
